Purpose and Goal

As instructors, we often have a tacit understanding of how students learn, and particularly of how they learn in our courses. Taking that tacit knowledge and making it explicit can help deepen our understanding of learning. It can also help us identify potential challenges in the learning process, which can in turn help us better address them.

A Steps-in-a-Process Diagram is an example of a graphic organizer, a category of useful tools for building knowledge and organizing information that allows for visually demonstrating and communicating relationships between ideas and content. Organizing and illustrating the process of learning should enhance your ability to analyze how learning can be improved. Additionally, it can be used to communicate with others who are interested in teaching and learning in higher education.
