About this Activity Set

If you've not yet done so, watch the intro video for this activity set, Assessing and Evaluating.

Definition

A Do-It-Yourself Teaching Evaluation is an assessment of teaching that you create yourself and administer at some point during the academic term.

Purpose and Goal

As we have seen in the research, the typical end-of-term student evaluations of teaching have some challenges. They may tell us some things, but they may not generate the information we need to truly evaluate our teaching. Indeed, the standard forms may not even ask the questions we want to be answered.

You need not rely only on student evaluations for information about your teaching. Rather, you can create their own, which can often be administered during the term so that there is time to make course corrections.
