Definition

The Backward Design Template, developed by Jay McTighe, provides a structure for helping teachers think through the basic structure of courses. It is a template that asks you to supply goals and objectives, what you will use as evidence of learning, and a plan for learning activities.

Purpose and Goal

Course design is a complicated undertaking, and indeed an entire branch of scholarship is dedicated to discovering and sharing the processes involved. Part of the process encompasses setting clear goals, choosing activities, and choosing assessments. As teachers, we are often faced with designing a course from the ground up; however, the challenge is that we have had little guidance on how to go about this task. The Backward Design Template guides you through the design process, beginning with and staying focused on identifying clear goals and objectives.
