Definition

The Visual Design Inventory is an informal quiz intended to identify your ability to spot visual problems with a design. This instrument presents 10 questions and gives you two choices per question.

Purpose and Goal

Few professors have had much training in visual design. Therefore, we tend to be more comfortable designing course materials that are text-based or oral in nature. Yet visual design can impact student access, understanding and engagement. For this reason, we need to pay attention to the visual design elements of course materials. Gaining an understanding of our design skills or deficits is an important first step.

The Visual Design Inventory can help you assess your visual design acuity as you identify visual design mistakes instructors commonly make. The Visual Design Inventory can provide you with information about whether you can see design issues that could hinder student access or understanding.
