If you've not yet done so, watch the intro video for this activity set, Attending to Visual Elements in Teaching.

Definition

A Visual Design Critique is a process of analyzing and evaluating the effectiveness of visual design elements in instructional materials such as handouts, presentations or websites.

Purpose and Goal

Visual design is a vital part of effective teaching. The very best content can get lost if it’s not organized so that it engages learners. However, few instructors are trained as designers, and few can identify poor visual design, leading to less effective teaching and learning experiences for students.

Visual design critique aims to improve the visual appeal and effectiveness of instructional materials and support student learning. It involves identifying design flaws and evaluating the visual elements' impact on the overall message, usability, and learning experience. Through visual design critique, you can develop a critical eye for visual design, identify common design flaws, and consider constructive feedback for improving the quality of instructional materials.
