About this Activity Set

If you've not yet done so, watch the intro video for this activity set, Attending to Visual Elements in Teaching.

Definition

In How It Started/How It’s Going, you choose one visual element from your class to improve, use a design principle to change it, and then share a “before” and “after” version documenting your work.

Purpose and Goal

Research suggests that effective visual design can improve student comprehension. Therefore, it is worthwhile to give the visual design of our instructional materials time and attention. Because many of us are not accustomed to attending to visual design in teaching, getting started can feel overwhelming. The best approach can be to start small since even small changes can make big differences in visual effectiveness.

Starting small and focusing on a single task can help you build the skill set that lays the groundwork for developing a broader sense of visual acuity. Through this practice, you can learn to apply basic design principles that will improve the effectiveness of your design and that will increase student appreciation and, potentially, their understanding. This activity allows you to complete a small visual design task as you work to improve a single image and then reflect on what you have improved.
