Definition
This prompt, Calling All Cold Callers, asks you to describe your experience with and views on cold calling, to reflect on why you hold those views, and to describe the results you’ve seen.
Purpose and Goal
Cold calling means calling on students who have not volunteered. Merely hearing the term cold calling can elicit a strong response from teachers and students alike: we either love it or hate it. While there is research to support the efficacy of this technique, it can also make students anxious. However, research has shown that using it well can help to facilitate discussion.
This activity prompts you to consider how and why you use (or don’t use) cold calling, to consider your experiences with cold calling, and to further define your classroom discussion strategies.
